Sinusitis is broadly defined as inflammation of the nasal cavity and para-nasal sinuses. Depending on the involvement of the sinuses, it could be maxillary, ethmoidal, frontal and zygomatic. Sinusitis causes are grouped into acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis.
Sometimes causes are too vague to diagnose the pathology and hence a radiogram is warranted.
Causes of sinusitis include:
1. Sinus infection
2. Deviated septum
3. Common cold
4. Nasal polyps
Acute sinusitis causes include obstruction of nasal passages, or an altered immune system response to hay fever. Chronic sinusitis is due to polyps, deviated septum, sinus infections or sinus surgery.
Sinusitis symptoms are a cause of concern since they could be linked with a wide variety of diseases. Most prominent symptoms are due to the involvement of nose and throat. These presentations are not characteristic of a pathology fixated to the sinuses but could be a result of other conditions too.
Symptoms of sinusitis are:
1. Loss of sense of smell
2. Nasal discharge
3. Stuffy nose
